Dream Insurance Brokers Inc. is committed to protecting your privacy and personal information. In order to provide our products and services, we need to collect, use and disclose information about you, so protection of your personal information is our highest priority.

The following Privacy Policy is a summary of our privacy practices.

Why do we collect personal information?

We generally use personal information to manage and administer business, including to understand your insurance needs, communicate with you effectively and to provide you with the products and services you request.

Common purposes for which we collect your personal information are to:

  • Enable us to acquire or renew an insurance policy for you;
  • Assist you and assess your ongoing needs for insurance;
  • Keep your information accurate and up-to-date;
  • Offer you products and services to meet your needs;
  • Conduct actuarial and accounting evaluations;
  • Protect us both against error or fraud;
  • Investigate and settle claims; and
  • Comply with the law and requirements of regulatory bodies where required

We may also use personal information for other purposes with your consent, or as permitted or required by law.

What personal information do we collect?

Personal information is information that identifies you as an individual client and relates specifically to you. We may ask for personal information about you including:

  • Basic information such as your name, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, birth date, marital status and beneficiary information
  • Claims history
  • Credit history and past payment records
  • Driver’s record, including driver’s license number
  • Details about your property such as the value of your home and its contents
  • Employment information
  • Social Insurance Number, only where necessary

We may obtain this information from:

  • You
  • Insurance companies
  • Other insurance brokers or agents
  • Credit reporting organizations
  • Motor vehicle and driver licensing authorities
  • Financial institutions

We may also otherwise collect personal information with your consent or as permitted or required by law.

Who do we disclose your personal information to?

For many of the purposes identified above, we will need to share your personal information with others in order to serve your needs. These other parties commonly include:

  • Insurance companies
  • Other insurance brokers or agents
  • Credit reporting organizations
  • Professionals working with us such as adjusters or lawyers
  • Financial institutions. For example, the organization that carries your mortgage
  • Insurance intermediaries for marketing purposes, unless you ask us not to

We may also transfer personal information to service providers (including our affiliates acting in this capacity) that perform services on our behalf, for example information technology and/or data hosting or processing services or similar services, or otherwise to collect, use, disclose, store or process personal information on our behalf for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

Some of these service providers may be located outside of Canada, including in the United States, and your personal information may be collected, used, disclosed, stored and processed in these foreign jurisdictions for the purposes described above. Reasonable contractual or other measures we may take to protect your personal information while processed or handled by these service providers are subject to applicable foreign legal requirements, including lawful requirements to disclose personal information to government authorities in certain circumstances.

We may use and disclose personal information in connection with the proposed or actual financing, securitization, of all or part of Dream Insurance Brokers Inc. or our business or assets, for the purposes of evaluating and/or performing the proposed transaction.

We may disclose your personal information as necessary to meet legal, regulatory, industry self- regulatory, insurance, audit, and security requirements, and otherwise with your consent or as
permitted or required by law.

How do we protect your personal information?

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information using physical, electronic or procedural security measures appropriate to the sensitivity of the information in our custody or control, which may include safeguards to protect against loss or theft, as well as unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use or modification.

Authorized persons who require access to your personal information in order to fulfil their job requirements will have access to your personal information. We may establish and maintain a file of your personal information for the purposes described above, which will be accessible at our offices. We will retain your personal information for as long as we need it to fulfill the stated purpose or as required by law.

We take steps to maintain your personal information in as accurate, complete and up-to-date a form as necessary for the purposes for which it will be used. To inform us of any changes to your personal information, please contact us as described below.

Consent

  • We may obtain your express consent or we may determine that consent has been implied by the circumstances.
  • We might ask you for your express consent in writing, for example in a signed consent or application form;
  • We may ask for your express consent in person or over the telephone;
  • We may determine that by seeking insurance through our organization, your consent has been implied for us to deal with your personal information in a reasonable manner

There are also legal exceptions in which we will not need to obtain your consent or explain the purposes for the collection, use or disclosure of your personal information. For example, this could apply when there is an emergency situation, or if it is necessary for your protection or ours.

You have control over how we handle your personal information

You should know that you do have choices when it comes to how we handle your personal information. You may refuse to allow us to obtain, use or share your personal information and may withdraw a previously given consent at any time, subject to contractual and legal restrictions and reasonable notice.

However, depending on the situation, if you refuse or withdraw your consent you may be limiting or even preventing our ability to provide you with the product or service you desire.

For example, if you do not allow us to obtain information about your driving record, it is unlikely that we will be able to provide you with auto insurance.

Privacy Policy Changes

This Privacy Policy may be revised from time to time. If we intend to use or disclose personal information for purposes materially different than those described in this policy, we will make reasonable efforts to notify affected individuals, if necessary, including by revising this Privacy Policy.

Your continued provision of personal information or use of our services following any changes to this policy constitutes your acceptance of any such changes. This policy is effective as of September 1, 2017.
